Bartholomew de Badlesmere, 1st Baron Badlesmere 1) 2) Born 1275 Died 14 Apr 1322, 46 or 47 years 3) Notes: Bartholomew's IPM identifies his heir as Giles de Badlesmere, his son, and highlights his extensive land ownership across the country. Bartholomew served in Edward I's armies including on campaigns in Gascony, Flanders and Scotland. Bartholomew was tried and executed for supporting rebellion against the Despencers. Margaret de Clare Daughter of Thomas de Clare, Lord of Thomond and Juliana FitzGerald. Born ± 1287 4) Died after 1327 5) 4) Notes: Margaret was a "de Clare" as demonstrated by her being heir of Richard de Clare. In his IPM (C 135/1/21) dated 1327. "Margaret, late the wife of Bartholomew de Badelismere, and Maud, late the wife of Robert de Clifford, (both) aged 40 years, are his next heirs." Margaret was famous for being the first female prisoner, held in the tower of London. In 1312, she refused the admittance of Queen Isabella to Leeds Castle and subsequently ordered her archers to fire on the Queen when she attempted to make entrance by force. Susbequently King Edward attacked Leeds Castle. Margaret surrended after 5 days. She was held in the tower until 1322 when she was eventually released and subsequently retired to the covent house of the Minorite sisters outside Aldgate. Children: |
