Notes: Elizabeth Hunter was John Edward Ward's mother.

She married William Ward approximately four years after John Edward's birth - in 1869 (1911 census). Together, William and Elizabeth had the following children:
Samuel Ward 1870 - Hexham
Elizabeth Ward 1871 - Hexham
Jane Anna Maria Ward 1872 - Durham
Margaret Ann Ward 1873 - Durham
William Thomas Ward 1876 - Lanchester
Jane Emma Maria Ward 1877 - Lanchester
Isabel Ward 1879 - Lanchester
Edward Ward 1881 - Lanchester

John Edward Ward, Elizabeth's ninth child (in accordance with 1911 census) was born illegitimately in 1865, in Hexham. See "Illegitimate".

man Illegitimate‏‎ 5) 14)

Notes: John Edward Ward was the illegitimate son of Elizabeth Hunter. He was, however, brought up in the household of Elizabeth's husband, William Ward. William and Elizabeth lived at 16 Allendale Cottages from sometime between 1871 and 1881 to their deaths. These cottages belonged to the Allendale Drift mine, where William and his sons and grandsons all worked.

Whether John Edward's birth-father was William Ward is unclear. DNA evidence may at some point provide an answer to this question.

William Ward's family were originally farmers from Norfolk having lived in the Fundenhall / Forncett St Peter area for at least three centuries. For William's ancestry and details on John Edward's siblings see: http://skliar-ward.com/family/humo1_/F5/I7/.

--
While William Ward appears as John Edward's father in census records and on his marriage certifacte, the evidence again him being the father is strong:
All of William Ward and Elizabeth Hunter's children are born from 1869 onwards and have their births recorded. William and Elizabeth married in 1869
There is no birth recorded for a John, or John Edward Ward, to a mother with maiden name Hunter at any time in the 1860s
John Edward Hunter is born in 1865 (the correct year), in Hedley (the correct registration district and town) to an Elizabeth Hunter
John Edward's birth is 4 years before William and Elizabeth have any recorded children. They go on to have eight children in eleven years
