man Joseph Tompkins‏‎ 1) 2) 3) 4)

Occupation: ‎1803 Tring, Hertfordshire, England; Labourer 4)
Residence: ‎1798 Tring, Hertfordshire, England 5)

Notes: It is very difficult to differentiate between two Joseph Tompkins of similar age living in Tring. That the father of Ann Tompkins was Joseph is demonstrated in numerous primary records.

See notes for Ann Tompkins for broader details. The following definitive statements can be made re Joseph:
1) His children include Hannah, Ann, Lydia, Susannah and Mary - all identified through his daughter's will
2) He was a labourer in Tring in 1803
3) His children were born in the 1770s

Lydia Tomkins is baptised at Great Marlow, October 1778, to Joseph Tompkins and Mary.
Hannah Tomkins is baptised at Great Marlow, 1782 to Joseph and Mary.
Ann at Great Marlow, 1772 to J and M
Mary at GM 1770, to J and M
Jemima - to J and M - at Tring 1785

While the above family seems to be a great match - there is an Ann Tompkins residing in Great Marlow, per 1841 census, aged 65 - which would match the above Ann. If that we re the case, then this would not be correct.

There is a second potential family at Abingdon. The non-confomist records advise Joseph and Lydia Tompkins had the following children:
Lydia - 1780
Ann - 1781
Mary - 1784
William Tripp - 1787
Alfred - 1789
Edward - 1790

Notes: Ann firstly married Thomas Harding of Tring in 1803 at church of St George, Hanover. Thomas died in 1805, aged 30.

There are multiple Ann Tompkins, all born around the same time, in a similar area, with a father named Joseph. For example:
o Ann Tompkins marries a Thomas Amsden in 1802 (Westminster) and has a daughter, Fanny Wood Amsden, born in Tring, in 1808. Fanny's non-conformist baptism details her grandparents - Joseph and Ann. This Joseph is probably the Joseph that marries Ann Swannell in the 1780s. Given Ann is married to Thomas Amsden as opposed to Thomas/Roger, she can be confirmed as not the wife of Roger. However, even identifying this Ann with certainty is challenging: Ann might be the Ann baptised in Tring in 1785, or given she married in Westminster and is described in her marriage record as "of Westminster", she could be the Ann born in 1785 in Westminster.
o Then there's an Ann baptised to Joseph and Lydia in Abingdon, Berkshire, 1781. This Joseph was a non-conformist. Like Joseph father of Ann. He is described as a baker, however, so probably not the correct Joseph: Joseph being described as a labourer.
o There is a Jemima Tompkins buried in Tring in 1785, aged 1, to a Joseph and MaryTompkins. Suggesting at least another possible set of parents (though no relevant baptism identified).

All the above can probably be eliminated, however, as being born too late to be this Ann. The 1841 census, her burial record, and the date of her first marriage suggest a birth of c1773-1776.

Plenty of Ann's relatives are, however, known with certainty. From her will we know her nieces and nephews:
o James Dawe, William Dawe - children of Hannah Tompkins and William Dawe (Tring) married in 1801.
o Ann Jennings - maybe daughter of the John Jennings and Ann Tompkins married in 1788 in St George Hanover Square
o John Holder - children of Lydia Tomkins and John Holder (Tring) married in 1804.
o John Gibbs, James Gibbs - children of Susannah Tompkins and Robert Gibbs (Piccadilly) married in 1797
o Mary Jones - maybe daughter of William Jones and Sarah Tompkins (Aylesbury) married in 1796
o Hannah Norris - children of John Norris and Mary Tompkins (Tring) in 1814.
o Ann Stacey

Additionally it is likely she is connected to the Gibbs family. Her original marriage to Thomas Harding in 1803 was witnessed by Thos Chambers and Susan Gibbs. Her second marriage to Roger Lee was witnessed by John Charlesworth and Elizabeth Gibbs. Her will then mentions John Gibbs and James Gibbs. Maybe these are here siblings/parents/nephews. Unknown.

William Dawe - brother-in-law of Ann Tompkins has his will witnessed in 1849 by James Norris, grocer of Tring and William Brown, land agent of Tring. Leaves everything to his brother James Dawe of Tring.
