Family

man John Greyndour, Lord of Abbenhall, Knight‏‎ 1) 2) 3)
Born ‎± 1356‎ 4)
Died ‎11 Sep 1416 Probably in France.‎, approximately 60 years 2)
Election: Elected twice as MP for Herefordshire ‎between 1401 and Oct 1404 1)

Notes: Of Abenhall, Gloucestershire. Inherited the manor of Clearwell from his father. The Lordship of Abenhall was inherited through his mother.

"Sir John Greyndore was a notable soldier and an important figure in the government of the southern Welsh marches." [HoP] John was involved in the Kings' military campaigns fighting at the Battle of Shrewsbury, and abroad in France. Alongside he received a series of lucrative appointments, including Steward and Constable of Monmouth and the Three Castles.

John Grenydour held the wardship of Isabel, wife of Richard Beauchamp (Lord Abergavenny) [IPM]. He was granted the wardship (including marriage) of Isabel Blound (daughter of William Blount), April 4 1399. [CPR]

John held the manors of Abenhall and Mitcheldean and land in Chepstow in the March, English Bicknor, Newland in the forest of Dean, St Briavels and Awre per his IPM.

Married ‎before Apr 1392 1) (at least 24 years married)
to:

woman Isabel Unknown‏‎ 1) 5)

Notes: Isabel was sometime married to John Joce. She did not, however, bring the Joce manor of Newland to the Greyndour family; rather that manor came from John Greyndour's grandmother - Margaret Joce. At least if various secondary sources are to be believed.

While History of Parliament identifies Joan's mother as Isabel - a second wife of John Greyndour, the sources HoP provide are contradictory. The Gloucestershire visitation only identifies John's first wife and makes Joan a full sister of Robert. The second Harleian pedigree identifies both wives and makes them half-siblings.

The pedigree with the half-siblings construction has been preferred purely on the basis that it subjectively seems more accurate (e.g. it correctly shows John's two wives and it has more detail than the Visitation of Gloucestershire). Nonetheless, the lack of certainty around Joan's mother cannot be understated!

Child:

1.
woman Joan Greyndour‏ 3) 6)

Notes: Joan Greyndour was the sister or half-sister of Robert Greyndour who married Jane Barre. Eventually Joan became heiress to the Grenydour estates initially held by Robert Greyndour's descendants.

Joan remarried to William Lichfield following William's death.
