Notes: There are at least three John Dixons born in c1835 -
One born in Longhorsley to Robert and Mary (census and church records)
One born in Longhorsley to William and Mary (church records)
One born in Long Framlington (census)

The 1871-1911 censuses can be conclusively linked to this John Dixon as they include his children. The 1841 and 1851 censuses are more problematic in that they rely on this John Dixon being the one born in Longhorsley. While on the face of it a reasonable assumption - the 1861 census introduces doubt as it shows a John Dixon born in 1835 in Longhorsley, living with his aunt, Margaret Jackson (innkeeper of the Fox and Hounds), in Wingate, Longhorsley, and employed as a school master - with a sister Ann Dixon, a dressmaker.

The presence of middle names among John's children also challenges John Dixon being a son of Robert and Mary - e.g. Walter (Ann's father) appears, as do other immediate relatives - whereas there is no son called Robert, or middle-name Robert.
